Christmastime in Florida means that a lot of people are visiting from out of state, including a lot of children who are spending the holidays with grandparents.

Since Face Painter Phyllis and I (Tony the Balloon Guy) have weekly restaurant appearances, we get to meet a lot of those kids, and help make their visits more fun. Some families even come back to see us again before they return up north.

Well, it’s Christmas Eve, and things have been so busy with the balloon entertainment and the face painting and the pony rides and the magic shows and the fortune telling, yadda yadda yadda, at birthday parties and Christmas parties, that there’s still a lot of Christmas shopping to be done for the junior partners in our family business.

Friday night, we drove down to Lakeland to build a balloon decor piece for a Christmas gala at a church.

I did the mechanical monkey work, inflating the balloons, assembling the columns, etc., and Phyllis made it look all magic-y with tulle and ribbon and such.

She makes me sick.

There is no shortage of balloon artists in the Tampa Bay area.

Unfortunately, many of them are the same.

In fact, there is a bay area company that TRAINS balloon artists to all be the same, then charges restaurants to use these youngsters, while the twisters themselves work just-for-tips.

One of the head trainers for that company left and started his own entertainment company. But although at least he PAYS “his” entertainers, it’s still just more of the same – him sending other people to entertain at parties while he bumps up the price to give himself a commission.

With all this sameness, it’s no wonder I (Tony the Balloon Guy) run into kids who ask for “the birds in the heart” or “the monkey in a tree,” like there are standard balloon sculptures instead of balloon twisters being true artists/entertainers!

I guess that’s why folks always seem so surprised when they see me at a party or event, and exclaim, “I’ve never seen anyone make balloons the way you do – and I’ve seen A LOT of balloon people!”

It doesn’t hurt that I usually have them saying this through laughter, either.
