Cruise Reviews – Royal Caribbean Balloon Artist/Twister Gets Thumbs-Up on “Allure of the Seas”

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

Do you ever wonder what kinds of things people told me (Tony the Balloon Guy) about my work on board Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world?

Thanks for asking!

“You are BRILLIANT with those balloons,” said one mom from Brazil.

“You’re a genius,” said another guest.

One night at dinner, a lady at the next table recognized me, and gushed over and over about how amazing the balloons were. And she didn’t even GET one!

And the lady who was “the boss of me” that week at sea said she really liked the way I interacted with the guests while I made the balloons – entertaining them instead of just silently cranking out balloons (I guess she’s seen that done).  ”You made it more like a show,” she said.

In fact, at one point, half a dozen kids sat down on the deck and watched me make things for others as if I WERE a show. (And grown-ups stood watching almost every minute I worked – I am in so many video cameras and cell phones all across the world right now, I can hardly imagine it.)

I had a great time, and I’ll write more about the cruise later.

Have a fun day!

They DO Love Their Balloons (Tony the Balloon Guy, a Tampa Bay area – Palmetto-Bayonet Point-Lecanto-Mascotte – balloon artist/balloon twister for special event and birthday party entertainment, sees the attachment people have with balloon animals on Royal Caribbean International’s “Allure of the Seas”)

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

As long as I (Tony the Balloon Guy) have been in this business, people have told me how long they (or their kids) have kept a balloon that I made.

It goes like this, “You made her a ladybug three weeks ago, and it’s still sitting on her dresser. It’s gotten smaller, but it’s still in proportion!”

Recently a mom told me that her son held a balloon in his hand for 12 hours!!!

But I never saw this phenomenon first-hand until I worked as a balloon artist for a week on Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world.

Suddenly, I would see the balloons I had made everywhere.

My guest, Face Painter Phyllis, and I go ashore at St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, and there is a little boy with a balloon in his stroller.

The elevator doors open for me to go to the Royal Promenade Cafe, and there are two kids inside, holding balloons.

A family is posing a little boy in front of the awesome classic Mercedes decorating Deck Five, and the boy is holding a balloon that I made.

And on and on and on.

I had always HEARD about how much folks love their balloons, but I had never LIVED with the people that I made balloons for before.

It was so cool to see for myself!!!

I’ll write more about the cruise later.

Have a fun day!

International Balloon Artist/Twister

Monday, September 12th, 2011

Face Painter Phyllis and I (Tony the Balloon Guy) returned home yesterday after a week-long cruise through the Eastern Caribbean Sea (I was the on-board balloon artist of the wek) on Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world.

Yes, it seems that every time I say or write the name of the ship, I have to add, “the biggest cruise ship in the world.” Guests that we met on board, who had taken other cruises, said we would be spoiled by this being our first one.

This wasn’t SUPPOSED to be my first cruise, though.

When I graduated from the University of South Florida (go, Bulls!), back in the dinosaur days before they had football, my mom bought me a trip as a graduation present. Thanks, Mom!

She intended it to be a cruise, but I asked her if, instead, she might go for a train pass and a bargain-priced airfare to Europe.

So I rode the rails through Europe for a few months that winter/spring, then did a little more traveling to the west that fall, and, finally, 20 years later, took a cruise.

Thanks to balloons.

As we ate lunch one day next to a window on the 16th floor of the Allure of the Seas (the biggest cruise ship in the world), Face Painter Phyllis remarked, “It’s amazing what BALLOONS have made possible.”

And not just the cruise – so MANY doors have been opened because of this silly business we have.

Anyway, the cruise didn’t really add many countries to my list of Been There’s: St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands is part of America, and St. Maarten/St. Martin is half Dutch, half French, and I’ve already been to both of those countries.

But I can add the Bahamas, which, strangely enough, is so close to Florida (where I live), that my dad once took a 17-foot motorboat there. Funny I never made it there before!

If you’re interested (and who wouldn’t be???), here’s the whole list, to the best of my memory, in no particular order. Except maybe alphabetical:

  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Bahamas
  • Belgium
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Holland/Netherlands
  • Iceland
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Luxembourg
  • Mexico
  • Norway
  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • USA

Although I was born in Wisconsin, I don’t have Canada on the list yet. There was a big lake in the way.

I think that lake is still there. What was it called…? Gitchigumi? Superior? I don’t remember.

Anyway, I’ll write more about the cruise later.

Have a fun day!

Fancy Meeting You Here! (Tony the Balloon Guy, a Tampa Bay area – Lutz-Wesley Chapel-Land O Lakes-Citrus Park – balloon artist/balloon twister for special event and birthday party entertainment, is a familiar face on Royal Caribbean International’s “Allure of the Seas,” the biggest cruise ship in the world)

On the Boardwalk of Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas (the biggest cruise ship in the world!)…

near Zoltar…

across from the Boardwalk Dog House…

not far from the carousel…

I (Tony the Balloon Guy) was making balloon animals, hats, swords, flowers, etc. for families from all over the world, when a lady interrupted me and asked for a business card.

This surprised me, as we were in the Atlantic Ocean, nearing St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands: what was she thinking of booking me for… and WHERE???

“Sure,” I stammered, fishing out a card. “But where do you live?”

“I see you at the Shops at Wiregrass,” she told me, referring to my regular Wednesday-morning Wesley Chapel appearances just north of Tampa, Florida. “I just needed the card to prove to my friends that it was really YOU!”

Small world!

Though most of the people I met on the ship that week were from other continents, I did talk to a few other folks from Florida, including one from Lutz, which, like Wesley Chapel, is one of the places I do often do birthday parties and other events.

Strange…

I’ll be writing more about my cruise later.

Have a fun day!

Tampa Birthday Party Entertainer Takes His Show to Sea

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

I (Tony the Balloon Guy) just got back today from a week aboard the world’s biggest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas.

We (Face Painter Phyllis and I) sailed out of Fort Lauderdale last Sunday, and visited the Bahamas (Nassau), the US Virgin Islands (St. Thomas), and the Dutch West Indies (St. Maarten/St. Martin).

I was the ship’s balloon artist for the week. Face Painter Phyllis was my guest, and did no work whatsoever. (Actually, she was a very good assistant during my balloon-working hours).

We had a lot of fun and met a lot of great people from all over the planet, and I’ll be writing more about the cruise soon.

Right now, though, it sure is nice to be back home with the junior partners of our family business, who we missed terribly!

I’ll write more about the cruise later.

Have a fun day!
