No Day at the Beach… Wait, It IS… for Royal Caribbean’s Cruise Ship Balloon Artist/International Balloon Twister on the “Allure of the Seas,” the World’s Largest Cruise Ship

Monday, December 19th, 2011

You’d think it would be fun to spend a week working as the balloon artist/balloon twister aboard Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world.

After all, I (Tony the Balloon Guy) only had to work two two-hour shifts (making balloon animals for happy children – and grown-ups!) on four of the days, and when I wasn’t working, I was playing on the ship or doing stuff like this…

Hmmm. I  guess you were right to think it would be fun to spend a week working as the balloon artist/balloon twister aboard Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world!

I’ll write more about the cruise later.

Have a fun day!

DreamWorks Cruise Ship: Part 3 (Tony the Balloon Guy, a central Florida – Altamonte Springs-Maitland-Kissimmee-St. Cloud-Orlando – balloon artist/balloon twister for special event and birthday party entertainment, considers the Shrek connection aboard Royal Caribbean International’s “Allure of the Seas”)

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

When I (Tony the Balloon Guy) found out that the Royal Caribbean International ship I would be working on for a week was the Allure of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world AND the DreamWorks boat, I was so excited.

As an ogre who met a princess (who turned into an ogre) and raised little triplet ogres – a girl and two boys – I feel a special connection to one of the DreamWorks characters.

See the resemblances?

I’ll write more about the cruise later.

Have a fun day!

The People’s Choice (Tony the Balloon Guy, a Tampa Bay area – Groveland-Sarasota-Lakeland-Clearwater – balloon artist/twister for special event and birthday party entertainment, finds others in agreement about Royal Caribbean International)

Friday, September 30th, 2011

Last night at our (Tony the Balloon Guy’s and Face Painter Phyllis’) weekly Thursday night restaurant, a dad mentioned that he and the kids had been in a few weeks earlier, and we weren’t there.

No, I said, that was the week I was the balloon artist on Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world.

That led to a fun discussion, because Dad was at the restaurant with his two sons, and they have a Royal Caribbean cruise booked in November. He and his wife had taken a Royal Caribbean cruise about seven years ago, and wanted to go with the boys.

They won’t be on the Allure (maybe the Freedom of the Seas – he wasn’t sure), but I know they’ll have a great time. We talked about how nice everything is with Royal Caribbean, and how much fun stuff there is to do, especially with them taking two young boys along.

One of the boys will be turning five years old during the cruise, and he invited me to come along and do my balloon thing at his birthday party. Dad didn’t exactly say no, but I’m not putting it on my calendar yet.

:-)

Later last night, the same thing happened – a mom and dad asked where Face Painter Phyllis and I had been a few weeks back, and I told them about my working vacation.

“We were just on the Allure in May!” Mom exclaimed.

So we talked about all the wonderful activities and food and such aboard the biggest cruise ship in the world, and they agreed with what everyone had told us on our cruise: because we had taken our first cruise on the Allure of the Seas, we were spoiled now, and any other ship would be a disappointment.

Then I guess we’ll just have to keep going back to that one!

I’ll write more about the cruise later.

Have a fun day!

DreamWorks Cruise Ship: Part 2 (Penguins from New York, Balloon Artist/Twister from Central Florida/Tampa Bay area – Orlando-Lakeland-Wesley Chapel-Tierra Verde-Clearwater – “smile and wave, boys, smile and wave” on Royal Caribbean International’s “Allure of the Seas”)

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

The week that I (Tony the Balloon Guy) was the balloon artist/balloon twister on Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world, I was asked for a lot of penguins made of balloons, like this one:

Why penguins?

I think it was because kids kept seeing these guys walking around the ship:

After all, this was the Allure of the Seas, the DreamWorks boat – you were bound to run into Madagascar characters!

(And yes, your eyes are telling you the truth: there are parades on the ship!)

I’ll write more about the cruise later.

Have a fun day!

St. Thomas and Hawaii: Balloon Artist/Twister Tony the Balloon Guy, of Tampa/Clearwater/St. Petersburg/Lakeland/Orlando/Sarasota/Bradenton, Appreciates American Island Paradises

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

A few years back, I (Tony the Balloon Guy) had the pleasant opportunity to stop in Hawaii for a few days on the way to Australia, and then for a week on the way back.

It was great to be somewhere so tropical and exotic, but still be in America, with everything that came with that (not having to change money, being able to speak my own language, etc.).

It felt like that when Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world, on which I was working as a balloon artist/balloon twister, docked in St. Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands.

There was that beautiful look of the island from the ship, the mountains rising from just behind the beaches, surrounded by the sea.

And then as soon as we stepped off the ship, we saw folks talking on their cellphones.

We’re in America again – the phone works!

Not that we were cut off on the ship – the Allure of the Seas does offer ship-to-shore phone calls, and you can also participate in an on-board program that lets you use your own cell phone on the ship. There is also Internet service available at sea.

Nonetheless, it was nice to be able to call the junior partners of our family business with the phone we had already paid for, which we could not do in St. Maarten/St. Martin or Nassau.

When you get off the ship in St. Thomas, it’s a cheap taxi ride into town, where there is abundant shopping, restaurants, some historical buildings, and even a little library.

For a less city-fied look at the island, excursions are available to the beaches, diving, fishing, hiking, etc. You can even head over to St. John, which is said to be very pretty, and be back in time to not miss the boat. And you can buy these excursions from Royal Caribbean, right on the ship.

We met some locals who had moved from New Jersey and Florida, and momentarily toyed with the notion of moving to a tropical Caribbean island that was part of the USA (no papers needed to move, etc.), but we’re pretty happy in Florida ourselves – and we can always visit St. Thomas again!

I’ll write more about the cruise later.

Have a fun day!

DreamWorks Cruise Ship: Part 1 (Tony the Balloon Guy, a Tampa Bay area – Lakeland-Sarasota-St. Petersburg-Clearwater – balloon artist/balloon twister for special event and birthday party entertainment, enjoys the characters aboard Royal Caribbean International’s “Allure of the Seas”)

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

The first day that I (Tony the Balloon Guy) was the balloon artist/balloon twister aboard Royal Caribbean International’s the Allure of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world, I met with the lady who was the boss of me for the week.

We talked about what I would be doing, where I would be doing it, what to do if there were any problems, etc.

“If there is an emergency and you need to reach me while you’re away from your stateroom,” she said, “any of the crew members should be able to call me for you.”

But, she advised, it was important that – if an emergency did arise – I explain to the crew member exactly who my boss was and what her position was. I shouldn’t, she advised, just say her name.

“Since this is the DreamWorks ship,” she said, “they might think it’s a joke if you just ask them to call Fiona for you.”

I’ll write more about the cruise later.

A Floating Town (Tony the Balloon Guy, a central Florida and Tampa Bay area – Orlando-Sarasota-Gibsonton-Clearwater) balloon twister/artist, is still amazed by size of Royal Caribbean International’s “Allure of the Seas,” the biggest cruise ship in the world)

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

The week that I (Tony the Balloon Guy) was the balloon artist/twister aboard Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world, I was in the same boat as 6,300 passengers/guests and 2,200 crew members from 70 different countries.

And I made something out of balloons for each and every one of them.

Or did it just seem like it?

I’ll write more about the cruise later.

CHICAGO: Balloon Artist/Twister and Face Painter Paint the Town – And All That Jazz – on Royal Caribbean International’s “Allure of the Seas,” the Biggest Cruise Ship in the World

Monday, September 19th, 2011

Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world, has so much for guests to do, including some top-notch entertainment.

And I (Tony the Balloon Guy) am not just talking about the balloon artist/twister they had for a week in early September!

Though everyone said that guy was really entertaining. Just sayin’.

There are also a lot of shows on the Allure.

An ice skating show. A comedy show. A water show. An acrobatic show.

My guest, Face Painter Phyllis, and I, saw the Broadway musical, Chicago.

It was fantastic. We had never seen it (or the movie before), so of course we were impressed the the funny story and all.

But I especially liked the music. The orchestra was great! And I liked how they were onstage so we could see them, like they were part of the play (they kind of WERE part of the play!).

After the show, Face Painter Phyllis and I walked along the Royal Promenade and stopped for cookies (yes, we’re old) at the Promenade Cafe.

We shared a table with a couple who had also just come from the show. They had also loved it.

“Those kids were really working!” the other gentleman said, as his wife nodded. “I saw Chicago in New York, and it was even better here.”

So the next time you’re on the Allure of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world, be sure to take in a show. They’re fabulous.

And get a balloon animal. Even if I’m not the one making them, nobody can be uncheered by a balloon!

I’ll write more about the cruise later.

Have a fun day!

Car Parking – Royal Caribbean International’s “Allure of the Seas” Balloon Artist/Twister’s Fort Lauderdale Advice

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Since I (Tony the Balloon Guy) live in Florida, about four and a half hours from Ft. Lauderdale, it didn’t make sense for me and Face Painter Phyllis to fly over for my week of being the balloon artist/twister aboard Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world.

Our friend Elaine recommended Park’N Go, a lot that is a little cheaper than the one at the terminal, especially if you pay ahead of time online.

Park’N Go is just a few blocks from the ship, and they have a free shuttle (no more than five minutes), and are very helpful with your bags.

Plus, as we were leaving their lot on the shuttle, we saw MONKEYS!!!

They were so cute!

One of the shuttle passengers, who had been in the area for a while, said that the monkeys were descendants of circus performers who had escaped some 40 years ago.

I don’t know if that’s true or just legend, but it was a fun way to start our adventure on the Allure of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world.

I’ll write more about the cruise later.

Have a fun day!

Royal Caribbean International’s “Allure of the Seas” Activities Include Balloon Artist/Twister And So Much More!!!

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

The girl on Royal Caribbean International’s Allure of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world, was 13 years old. In fact, she had turned 13 years old on the cruise, just two days earlier.

I (Tony the Balloon Guy) know this for a fact, because her mom told me so while I was working as the ship’s balloon artist/twister.

What is there for a newly-13-year-old girl to do on the biggest cruise ship in the world?

Well, there’s a ton of food to eat.

There are islands to visit.

And live shows to watch.

And parades.

There are two rock climbing walls.

And two surfing-simulator machines.

And ice skating.

And a zip-line.

And a basketball court.

And a miniature golf course.

And ping-pong tables.

And a supervised lounge for kids 12-17 only.

“With all that,” the mom told me, “what does she want to do? Get a balloon from you! Every day she wakes up and checks the schedule to see when you’ll be making balloons.”

Awwwww. Sweet!

I’ll be writing more about the cruise later.

Have a fun day!
