Our family business helps parents, business people, educators, libraries, churches, scouts and others attract and entertain families, with balloon art, face painting, pony rides, magic shows, juggling, fortune telling, glitter tattoos, piano music, etc., for events big and small.
At a restaurant, I (Tony the Balloon Guy) already made a balloon hat for a little girl, and I’m starting to make one for her teenage cousin.
Out of nowhere, while the cousin is talking to the girl’s mom, the girl says, “She doesn’t like hot dogs.”
I ask the teen, “You don’t like hot dogs?!?”
The teen turns to me, stunned. “How did you know that?”
Immediately, I hold up the balloon, which I have already wrapped around her head to measure, so the hat will fit. “I can tell by the size of your head.”
“It’s true. I’ve been doing this for years, and I’ve learned a few things about people along the way. And I can tell by the size and shape of your head that you don’t like hot dogs.”
“Are you SERIOUS???”
The little girl’s mom, out of the teen’s sight, is bent over laughing silently.
“Yup,” I insist.
“Oh my gosh! That is amazing! I HAVE to learn balloons now. Look what it lets you do!!!”
The little girl says, “I TOLD him you don’t like hot dogs!”
The kicker: when I measured the teen’s head, I remarked that she must be a genius, because her head was so big. When the family scoffed that it wasn’t brains in that big head, I insisted that it was. After the Hot Dog Incident, the little girl’s dad asks me, “So, what do you think is in there NOW?”
Earlier in the evening, at the same restaurant, a mom asked her son, “Anthony, are you done eating?” He said that he was, and he watched me make him a balloon animal.
A moment later, I told him, “You know, my name is ‘Anthony,’ too.”
Shocked, he asked, “How did you know my name is ‘Anthony???’”
“Because we have the same name. As you get older, you’ll realize that you can always spot people who have the same name as you…”
Didn’t realize until it was time to go, but the party I (Tony the Balloon Guy) did last night was in the same New Tampa (yes, that’s a real place) neighborhood as a party I had done six days earlier.
Maybe that would be less weird if I didn’t live two counties away from there. And maybe it would be less weird if the two families actually knew each other.
Earlier this year we pulled up to a house to do a balloons-and-face-painting party, and we realized that we had done a pony party at the house NEXT DOOR once. Again, those people didn’t know each other.
Tony the Balloon Guy, coming soon to a party near you… and then on the other side of you… and then… your party?
When we (Tony the Balloon Guy, Face Painter Phyllis & family) first started in the celebration industry, we took our carousel of six live ponies to schools, churches, festivals, etc., and one or two hand-led ponies to birthday parties.
As the balloon entertainment, magic shows, face painting, and glitter tattoos really took off, and the single-pony parties held steady, the pony carousel kind of got put on the back burner.
And since it’s a lot easier to tote an apron of balloons, a case of magic, and/or a box of paints to an event than to prepare and haul a huge six-armed metal spider and six saddled ponies, we really haven’t minded, or pushed the carousel too much.
But we still have all those pony friends, and the equipment, and they still work from time to time.
Please keep that in mind if your school or church needs something really fun for a fall festival or other event!

And you parents who won’t have the kids home all day any more… hang in there, you poor things. You’ll be OK. There’s always next summer.
