A lot of times, when I have a chance between kids, I (Tony the Balloon Guy) make something and give it to a grown-up in a restaurant (usually a lady). Mostly I don’t ask first, because they’ll automatically say No Thank You, but when it’s already put together and all cute-lookin’, they are almost always happy with it.
For some reason, though, last night I did ask this one lady who was waiting alone at a table. She looked a little edgy, and I didn’t want to just hand her something. She did say No Thank You.
But when I was done for the night, and her date had arrived, I asked her one more time if she wanted a balloon. She looked at her companion and said, “Can I have one, Big Daddy?”
She ended up asking for a rose that she had seen me make for the chef to take to his girlfriend. She also told me that she had been watching all the other things I made, and listed the ones she especially liked. Then she confided, “When I first got here and saw all the kids, I thought, ‘Oh my…’”
See? That was the edginess I picked up on.
“Yeah, kid’s night is fun, but not always when you’re at a nice Italian restaurant for a quiet, romantic dinner.” I looked over at the gentlemen. “They weren’t TOO loud tonight, though, were they?”
He shrugged. “By the time I got here, most of them were gone. I was fine.”
“I was fine, too,” the lady said quickly. “I just ordered my wine right away!!!”
I also made her a bear holding a heart, for a baby shower she’s throwing on Saturday. And we all lived happily ever after.
Have a fun day!
